Ominous Warnings

Saadi Qaddafi, one of the sons of Libya's slain dictator Moamer Qaddafi, told Al-Arabiya television by telephone from neighbouring Niger that a nationwide rebellion is brewing against the country's new rulers.

"I will return to Libya at any time," said Saadi from the country where he took refuge after the fall of Tripoli, which ended his father's 42-year iron-fisted rule of Libya.

Abdel Rahman Chalgam

Abdel Rahman Chalgam is a Libyan politician, the former Foreign Minister during the Gaddafi era, and the former Libyan representative at the United Nations Security Council.

At first incredulous to accounts of widespread murder perpetrated by Gaddafi's loyalists, he defected from the regime on February 24th, 2011, upon hearing Gaddafi broadcast commands for Libyans to kill protesters.

Displaced People Barred From Homes

Tripoli — Authorities in and around Misrata are preventing thousands of people from returning to the villages of Tomina and Kararim and have failed to stop local militias from looting and burning homes there, Human Rights Watch said today.

The abuse mirrors the treatment of roughly 30,000 displaced people from the nearby town of Tawergha, who have also been blocked from returning home for at least five months, Human Rights Watch said.

Today, Americans join with Libyans around the world in marking the one-year anniversary of their historic revolution. When Muammar Qadhafi chose to meet peaceful cries for liberty with military force, the Libyan people courageously fought back, and the world was inspired.

That Benghazi and, indeed, all of Libya, are no longer menaced by a tyrant is a credit to the profound sacrifices of the Libyan people.

There are still significant challenges ahead for Libya.

Country Celebrates 'Glorious Revolution'

THE Libyan embassy in Windhoek on Friday commemorated the first anniversary of the revolution against more than 40 years of dictatorial rule by Muammar Gaddafi.

With only a smattering of the diplomatic corps in Namibia attending the function, and a disappointing turnout by the Namibian foreign ministry too, Libyan embassy interim Chargé d'Affaires Ennas A.A. Enaas thanked the new Libya's "brothers and sisters" for their support during the popular uprising.

Statement by the Press Secretary on the First Anniversary of Libya's Revolution

The United States congratulates Chairman Jalil, Prime Minister al-Keeb, and all the people of Libya on the first anniversary of their historic revolution. Last February, few could imagine that the peaceful protesters in cities from Benghazi to Tripoli would bring down a four-decade-old dictatorship.

Nearly three months since the lifting of sanctions on Libya by the United Nations Security Council, uncertainty surrounds the fate and ownership of businesses owned by Tripoli across East Africa. It has now emerged that the UN is still investigating these investments.
