Big Give contest roadshow launched

Muscat: Dar Al Atta’a, a charity organisation which aims at helping the poor in the Sultanate, started its road show to colleges and universities in Muscat for the launch of the ‘Big Give Competition’.

The ‘Big Give Competition’ has been launched this semester for the first time. It encourages college students to compete for the best fundraising idea and implementing it.

Expat suffering from cardiac ailment stuck

Muscat: Indian expatriate who needs treatment for cardiac ailment is “stuck” in Ibri as his labour card is allegedly being “held back”.

Biju, an electrician, is suffering from acute cardiac problems for the past few weeks and has been advised by doctors to fly to India for advanced treatment.

“I had to pay around RO650 for my treatment. As I didn’t have money, I had to pledge my labour card. Now, I don’t know whether they have my card or not.

Seven killed in road accidents

Muscat: Seven people, including three citizens and an Indian expatriate, were killed in separate accidents recently.

Three citizens were killed and several others injured seriously when a car moving at high speed hit the road divider and got thrown to the other side of the road in Mawaleh, yesterday. According to the police, the driver lost control over the car which jumped the road barrier and was hit by three cars coming from the opposite direction.

Al Thuraya women bag honours after high drama

RAS AL KHAIMAH: The sailors of Sailing Arabia - the Tour left Ras Al Khaimah yesterday. The nine-boat fleet raced off the waters of the Al Hamra Marina and Yacht Club after their stopover in Ras Al Khaimah.

The nine-boat fleet arrived in Ras Al Khaimah on Sunday morning, having raced 232 kilometres from Abu Dhabi.

Ibra tech college students protest

Scores of Ibra Technology College students went on a sit-in protest yesterday demanding increase in the monthly allowance from RO25 to RO90.

A protesting student said the allowance was not enough even for transport fees, which makes it difficult for them to make ends meet. Another student said their studies were getting hampered because of the financial pressures.

‘At times, we have to survive on just one meal,’ he complained, while demanding an increase in the allowance.

New floatel adds to Duqms charms

MUSCAT: It’s time to get set for a luxury floating experience on a stationery hotel. Veronica, the floating hotel (or floatel), based at the Duqm port, is now open for business and leisure travellers.

Making the announcement about Veronica, which already had its soft opening in December last year, officials of DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering) Oman LLC, yesterday unveiled the facilities and amenities of the floatel.
