How to Make a Healthy Snack for Teens

Although the rules of good nutrition should be your guide, most teens are not going to be happy with a steady diet of carrot and celery sticks.

  • Cut down on the basic "bad guys:" fat, salt, sugar and empty calories.
  • Substitute similar but healthier alternatives when possible: pretzels for chips, air-popped popcorn for oily or buttered, yogurt-based dips for cheese- and mayo-based ones.
  • Chop fruits and veggies into bite-sized pieces or strips. Teens like foods they can grab and take with them.
  • Smoothies and fruit shakes are packed with nutrients and are also very trendy. Use yogurt, milk, fresh or frozen fruit and fruit juices.
  • Freeze grapes, mango slices, watermelon and berries for a fun, slushy snack.
  • Be flexible. Adding chocolate chips or M&Ms to a shake is a great way to get a chocolate fix along with all the nutrients in milk.
  • Dry-roasted nuts and seeds have a satisfying crunch and are a healthy snack in moderation. Also, use nut butters in celery or in sandwiches.
  • Select teas and fizzy waters instead of soda. Juices are all right some of the time, but they have a lot of sugar and calories as well.
  • Serve small portions of "real food." Mini bagels, crackers with a little bit of cheese, leftovers, microwave burritos and healthy breakfast cereals with milk all make excellent snacks.
  • Hand-make tortilla chips, oven fries, mini-pizzas to control fat and salt.
  • Serve snacks in small bowls, which make a small serving look more abundant.
  • Keep your refrigerator and cupboards stocked with what you want your teens to eat and don't keep what you don't want them to eat. If you provide pretzels for free, they're not likely to buy their own potato chips.

How to Prevent a Fire in a Home

House fires can be devastating. About 5,000 people a year die in fires, and 80 percent of these deaths occur in house fires. Fires kill more people per year in the United States than all other natural disasters put together. A fire can spread quickly and become deadly within 2 minutes; an entire house can be engulfed in flames in less than 5 minutes.

How to Choose a Pet for Your Family

When buying a pet for your family, take the time to learn which pet is right. It is a subjective decision that should take a lot of thought and consideration. There are many factors to consider when buying a pet. Review the following list for steps to take if you want to choose the right pet for the family.

  • Consider your finances before choosing a family pet. Some pets are more expensive to take care of than others. With a goldfish, you just need to feed it and maintain its tank, after the initial expense of purchasing a tank, rocks and decorations. Tropical fish, whether they are fresh water or salt, are more expensive and require more equipment, such as a filter and heater. Larger pets, such as dogs and cats need more food, beds and toys. They also need regular checkups and seasonal medications, such as tick medicine and heart worm pills. Consider the expenses incurred on a regular basis when selecting a pet. Remember also, that when a pet gets older or sick, the vet bills are larger.
  • Recognize your family dynamics before getting a pet. If you have young children, determine whether you want a large dog. If you do, then learn which dogs are good with children. If you stay at home with young children who cannot help with the pets, ask yourself if you have time to clean out a bunny or bird cage.
  • Think about the type of lifestyle you lead and whether a pet can fit into it. If you travel a lot as a family, determine what kind of pet can be alone with just someone popping in to feed it. You could also get a pet that can travel with you. You don't want to get a pet for the family that stays home alone or at a pet care facility most of its time.
  • Understand that young children often don't follow through on promises of taking care of pets. For this reason, you may decide to get a pet that is low maintenance. A bunny or bird needs their cages to be cleaned. The novelty usually wears off pretty quickly. You will likely find yourself nagging your child about cleaning out the cage, so ask yourself if you are willing to do that on a regular basis, or even clean out the cage yourself.
  • Decide whether you want a baby pet or one that is full grown. Full grown dogs and cats may be harder to train since they are often set in their ways, especially the latter. Adopted older pets may also have been mistreated and have concerns. Ask about an older pet's history before getting it. You don't want to get a dog or cat that is not safe around children because it has insecurity issues.
  • Think about the training that some pets will need. If you think you may want a dog, find out how much it costs to pay for obedience classes. Training is necessary especially if you have young children in the home. Oftentimes, dogs need to learn that all humans, including babies, are pack leaders.
  • Take your time when selecting a pet for the family. Sit down with the whole family and come to a mutual decision. Make a list with everyone's wish. Go over the pros and cons of each idea. Make sure everyone agrees on the final decision.

How to Throw Darts Consistently

Darts is a popular pub game that is also enjoyed at home and even played professionally. With darts, it is important to be able to throw with consistency--a consistent dart thrower is able to adjust his aim accordingly to hit his targets, while an erratic thrower can only hope to put the dart where he wants it. Increasing your consistency requires practice, even with the best form, but improving your form will greatly increase the effectiveness of your practicing.

  • Stand with your dominant leg forward and your non-dominant leg back. Align them so that a line drawn between the two would point at the dart board.
  • Keep the majority of your weight on your lead foot, but do not leave the rear foot weightless or off the ground, as this will make balance difficult and throw off your accuracy.
  • Lean forward slightly to reduce the distance to the board, but not so far that you find it difficult to maintain your balance.
  • Grip the dart with three or more fingers. More fingers will increase control during the throw, but can be more difficult to release without altering the trajectory.
  • Leave any fingers not holding the dart open and relaxed, not closed down against the palm.
  • Grip the dart just firmly enough to not have it moving in your grip--squeezing too tight will decrease consistency.
  • Pick a target on the board and aim for it. Even if you simply need a 20, pick a specific slice of single-20 to aim for.
  • Keep your body, with the exception of the throwing arm, still as you throw the dart and release it. The more still your body is, the more easily you can develop consistency in your throws.

How to Personalize a Mug

Personalized mugs can be given as gifts for many occasions. You can buy plain mugs and paint your own designs on them or upload photos to one of the many websites offering professionally printed mugs. You can also create mugs for a business by uploading a company logo. Since mugs are ubiquitous in nearly every American household, a personalized mug can be an effective marketing tool.

Things You'll Need

Photos in .jpeg format
Plain mugs
Enamel paints
Paintbrushes
Rubbing alcohol
Cotton balls

Photo and Logo Mugs

  • Determine whether the logo or photo you want to use is suitable for your mug. Use only high-quality photos and photo files.
  • Find a website that allows you to customize your mug with photos and logos. Compare the prices and offerings of each website.
  • Follow the website prompts for uploading your image and adding any other customizing information. Preview the mug if you can.
  • Fill out your shipping and billing information and look at the shipping time frame and refund policy.

Painted Mugs

  • Purchase plain white mugs, enamel paints and paintbrushes at an art supply store.
  • Wash and dry your mug and wipe it down with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol, which removes any residual oil from the mug.
  • Paint a design, picture or logo onto your mug.
  • Bake the mug in an oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. Let the mug cool inside the oven. Wash and dry the mug before using it.

Tips & Warnings

Fill the mug with candy, wrap colored cellophane around it and tie it with a ribbon for a gift.

Don't take the mug out of the oven right after it's finished baking; the enamel might crack because of the abrupt temperature change.
